Anthropic is handing its Agent Skills standard, a folder-based format for teaching AI agents specific tasks, to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The goal is to keep the standard open and vendor-neutral, with a roadmap covering versioned releases and a formal proposal process.
- Over 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code, have integrated Agent Skills since the standard was published in December 2025.
- Adoption is large: about 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installed.
- The standard is donated along with its name, logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io domain, and anyone can use or contribute to it without joining the foundation.
SkillOpt is a Microsoft framework that optimizes AI agent skills (prompt documents) using supervised training techniques—epochs, learning rates, validation gates—without modifying model weights. It treats skill documents as trainable state and uses an optimizer model to iteratively edit them based on scored rollouts.
- SkillOpt achieves +23.5 to +24.8 point accuracy gains across six benchmarks and seven models (GPT, Claude, Codex, Qwen), with optimized skills transferring across model scales and execution environments without retraining.
- The system generates compact, deployable skill artifacts (300–2,000 tokens) that add zero inference-time overhead—skills are static documents that run against unmodified target models.
- SkillOpt-Sleep, a nightly offline self-evolution engine, lets local coding agents (Claude Code, Copilot) automatically harvest past sessions, replay tasks, and consolidate validated skills behind held-out validation gates.
This article covers the `npx skills` CLI tool for installing, listing, updating, and removing reusable agent “skills” across over 40 coding agents. You can fetch skills from GitHub, GitLab, local paths, or any Git URL and target specific agents or install globally versus per-project.
- `npx skills` lets you install reusable "agent skills" from any GitHub/GitLab repo, local path, or Git URL into 40+ coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode, etc.)
- Supports fine-grained control: pick specific skills or whole repos, target specific agents, install globally vs per-project, and run non-interactively via --yes/--all for CI/CD
- Full lifecycle management is built in: list, find, update, remove, and init (to scaffold a new SKILL.md) for authoring your own skills
- Defaults to symlinking skills (single source of truth) but can copy files instead if symlinks aren't supported; community skills are browsable at skills.sh
